Valerie Talacko spent  six years as a research analyst in the Country Intelligence division of Global Insight, where she produced daily analysis of political,  regulatory and other developments in a number of central and eastern European states, reports on their investment climate and risk ratings.

Prior to that she worked for six years as a translator in the Czech Republic, both in-house on the political desk of  Czech news agency CTK 
's English service from 1993-98 and freelance for numerous clients, specialising in film, theatre,  history, art and architecture.  Freelance translation work included: screenplays by directors including Jan Švankmajer, Petr Václav and documentary maker Tomáš Škrdlant,  essays on Švankmajer for two publishers,  a catalogue of Czech short films for Krátký Film Praha a.s.; English texts for Svět a divadlo (World and Theatre)  and Střední Evropa (Central Europe) magazines, work for the Theatre Institute, work for the Aura-Pont theatre agency, essays and other material for  a major  exhibition on Rudolf II andPrague, and  historical materials for a book on R.W. Seton-Watson published by the T.G. Masaryk Institute.

In October 2005 she became a freelancer once again. Recent clients have included a property development company, the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, the Czech National Bank (editing only), an NGO ( proceedings of a conference on the European Constitution) and Czech library/ archival research and translation of literary criticism for a US client.
